If you have some trees in your garden, you probably know lots of things about them already, but here are some more facts about these wonderful and complex plants:
– Trees have scientifically proven healing qualities – hospital patients heal faster and they suffer less pain if the windows of their wards face trees;
– Trees are thirsty plants – they need around two thousand liters of water a year each to thrive well;
– The diameter of the roots of a tree measures the same as the diameter of the crown, applying an organic liquid fertilizer that gets to the roots will cause any tree to flourish;
– Trees never die because they are old – old trees become more sensitive to diseases and insect attacks and they die because of the harm caused by these factors;
– Some tree species can communicate with each other – when attacked by insects, willows, for example, emit a kind of chemical to inform other willows about the danger and to tell them to start producing insect repellent tannin to protect themselves;
– Stress is known to make trees grow stronger and some of them thrive better in the presence of mushrooms;
– Trees cool down their environment, making the temperature in hot cities more bearable;
– Only about one percent of a tree is actually alive – the thin layer immediately underneath the bark is the only part of trees that lives, the rest of the tree is dead tissue.
